It seems that xmodmap requires being run from an emulator inside an X session, which it's not supposed to. It worked for me. So set the IP manually, as harrymc suggests: export DISPLAY="127.0.0.1:10.0" Then X11 programs should be fine. Editing /etc/hosts seems to have no effect; and DNS is correctly configured ("dig localhost" correclty report both 127.0.0.1 and ::1) So, it seems to be a bug in whatever does DNS check over here
