Another way of resetting your Windows password, is THIS, which looks quite promising. I checked Active Directory to make sure the computer was added to the right container and it was. Turns out after copying the files, the permissions didn't inherit and the new account didn't have access to the shortcuts and couldn't create their own copy in the Users directory.
